By now everyone is familiar with certain credit card traps such as offering low APR and then switching it to much higher interest rates as the months go by. You may also know about the ever increasing fees that you have to pay for over the limit charges, or late payments. What you may not know about, or want to think about are the issues with your credit cards if you get divorced, or credit card issues on the Internet.
Interest Rates and Other Fees
This is a very important issue with credit cards that people are just realizing. Certain credit cards offer a way to get out of debt by transferring your higher balances to lower interest rate cards but then hitting you with very high APRs once the trial period is over. What you are left with is even higher finance charges and possibly over the limit fees and late payments if you can't afford the higher minimum payment. The fees are high on almost all credit cards, and when you charge something you need to take into account what fee you will be charged if you don't pay the full amount before the grace period ends.
Divorce
This is something that not many people think of or want to entertain the idea of, but in this increasingly common practice of divorce, you need to know your options. A credit card agreement precedes any split you may have with your spouse so if it is a joint credit card and your spouse decides to run up the bills you are still held responsible. When you are first thinking of getting a divorce, it is best to freeze the account or close any joint accounts altogether. It will save you much hassle later on when trying to separate the debt. Divorces are not pretty and there is often some form of revenge on the part of an angry spouse, so keep that in mind and choose to go solo with any credit cards you may have.
Internet
Internet fraud is a main and quite common issue with credit cards. Although banks and credit card companies are making it harder for online theft there is still a good chance that it could happen to you. Be very aware of who you are giving your credit card to, and how you are using it. Make sure that your credit card company has a number that you can reach 24 hours a day to report your card stolen or if it has unauthorized purchases. Do not use a credit card online with a site that is not completely secure.
Knowing the important issues with credit cards will help keep you safe and with a good credit rating.
