The credit card company and the airline basically join forces to give the consumer what they want, free airline travel.

Most frequent flier miles credit cards accrue miles at the rate of at least one mile for each dollar when you make a purchase. This is done on new purchases and not on your finance charges for the previous purchases. After you spend a certain amount, usually in the range of $20,000 to $25,000 you can redeem your miles for a free ticket on the participating airline. The standard and lowest reward is for a round trip economy ticket for travel in the continental United States.

To help you to decide whether a frequent flier miles credit card is a good value for you then you have to do some simple math. You need to know how much on average you spend per year and how much a regular ticket would be to where you go. You don't want to charge up a card just to get the miles for a ticket that is on sale normally or at lower cost.

Some airline cards have a cap of $10,000 a year that you can put towards your miles. At an average of $10,000 a year then it will take you 3 years to earn a free airline ticket. If you spend less than that then it may not be worth it for reasons such as annual fees and again the actual price of the ticket. The annual fees are slightly higher on reward credit cards such as these so you need to look on what you would pay for that. You should look for airline credit cards that do not put a cap on how many miles you can accrue in a single year or charge an outrageous annual fee.

Another disadvantage would be an airline credit card where the points expire. Some expire in as little as 3 years which is just about how long it might take you to get the basic free ticket. If you are looking for a ticket that would bring you to an exotic locale it might take you longer than that to accrue your miles. So, choose a company where the points never expire if possible.
