A "tax return" is the government form that a taxpayer completes and submits to the taxing agency to show income received, the amount of money withheld or already paid, what taxes are due, credits and deductions to be applied, and so forth. The tax return informs the taxing agency of all relevant financial information so that the appropriate amount of taxes may be levied and collected by the agency. Tax returns are typically filed with the Internal Revenue Service and state taxing authorities.
