A "hedge fund" is a private investment fund that invests in stocks, and may employ a variety of techniques to enhance returns, such as shorting stocks and buying puts and calls. Hedge funds also often borrow money against stocks and use the money to buy more stocks in order to increase profits. Such borrowing against stock may be subject to margin regulations of the Federal Reserve Board.
