Certificate of Deposit

A "certificate of deposit" or CD is a certificate typically issued by a bank, credit union or savings and loan association that indicates a specified sum of money has been deposited. A CD has a maturity date and a specified interest rate and may be guaranteed, in whole or in part, by a government corporation such as, for example, the FDIC for banks.
